Recreation Studies

As a student in Recreation Studies, you will learn to provide programs and services which improve overall quality of life. Through coursework, you will learn to design, implement, and evaluate recreation programs, and develop those skills through course related hands-on recreation experiences. Within the broad area of recreation services, you will have the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge and skills in:

Bachelor of Science in Recreation Studies

Concentration: Community Recreation: Graduates of this program manage facilities, programs, and services that help people have a higher quality of life through positive, enjoyable, and enriching recreation and leisure experiences. Organizational settings include: commercial recreation and tourism, non-profit agencies, and government recreation agencies.

Concentration: Outdoor Recreation: Graduates of this program manage facilities, programs, and services that help people have a higher quality of life through positive, enjoyable, and enriching recreation and leisure experiences. Outdoor Recreation emphasizes the study of recreational activities related to and dependent upon the natural environment. Organizational settings include: commercial recreation and tourism, non-profit agencies, and government recreation agencies.

Concentration Recreation Therapy prepares students to become Recreational therapists who utilizes specialized applications of recreation and other activity-based, experiential interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.  In short, therapeutic recreation specialists assist in improving or maintaining the health status and quality of life for persons with various disabilities.
