Translational Neuromuscular Physiology Lab
This laboratory is directed by Dr. Joni Mettler. The primary focus of the lab is muscle metabolism and neuromuscular response to inactivity, and exercise training interventions. We integrate basic science muscle physiology and neuromuscular physiology techniques to examine muscle adaptations due to physical inactivity, training and muscle fatigue with an emphasis on how these changes translate to muscle function. Muscle biopsy, blood chemistry, electrical stimulation, electromyography, muscle performance and physical function tests, and Western blot procedures are performed within this laboratory that provides over 800 square feet of space. State of the art instrumentation within the laboratory utilized for data collection and analysis include: a Trigno Wireless EMG System (Delsys); a Power Lab Data Acquisition System (AD Instruments); a Digitimer Constant Current Electrical Stimulator (Digitimer); a Ultra-Low -80°C Freezer (ThermoFisher Scientific); a -20°C freezer (ThermoFisher Scientific); a Table Top Autoclave (Tuttnauer); a Mettler-Toledo Scale (Mettler); Bio-Rad gel electrophoresis system with blotting apparatus (BioRad); an Eppendorf Centrifuge (Eppendorf); a micro centrifuge (Eppendorf); a fume hood; and additional smaller standard laboratory items. We also work in conjunction with the Biomechanics and Sports Medicine Laboratory and utilize the Biodex System 4 Pro isokinetic dynamometer for muscle function testing.
